After the Sunset (2004)

I‘ve seen this movie in theatre couple of years ago, and now it was again on TNT in HD. I remember from the first time I saw it that there was a lot of confusion because at the same exact time there was a movie called “Before Sunset”.

Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek play a couple of diamond thieves, Max and Lola. And Woody Harrelson plays FBI agent Stan Lloyd, who is obsessed with catching and frustrated with consecutive failures. Even after Stan is suspended from FBI service, he still follows Max and Lola to the place of their retirement on a tropical island resort. He is so miserable, Max begins to help him out of pity. Even though Max is now retired, Stan tries to seduce him into stealing another, bigger diamond from a cruise ship where it’s on display. To complicate Max’s life, a local crime-lord (Don Cheadle) forces Max to steal the diamond for himself. A third preasure point is Lola, who is jealous that her beloved Max wants the diamond more then he wants to retire with her.

Any movie with Pierce Brosnan, no matter how bad, automatically becomes somewhat cooler because of his charisma. Salma Hayek tries to be sexy and seductive. She doesn’t do anything except being pretty. The story is lousy and completely unbelievable, so I was making an effort to try to believe it and let the movie-makers take me on adventure ride. I enjoyed the ride the way I enjoyed Disneyland: a mildly entertaining place. Don Cheadle’s performance was great as always. The chemistry between Stan and Max (Woody Harrelson and Pierce Brosnan) is what makes this movie work. Their love/hate relationship goes from hating each other to burring each other’s backs, to sleeping in one bed, then back to hate and so on – so much going on.

This movie would make a great rental or time killer like in this case because I’m watching it on cable.
