This is one of the best Bill Maher’s stand up comedy shows. He performs on stage in Boston in jeans and t-shirt, some time after the Bush’s “surge” began and presidential campaigns were at full speed, probably summer of 2007 when it came out live on HBO, ironically on the day Bush had a colonoscopy. He talks about Giuliani, conservatives and liberals, mess in Iraq, the “homosexuals on the march to destroy America”, “no child left behind”, “abstinence programs” and other “achievements” of Bush administration. His performance literally begins with describing Bush as incompetent f***-up. He also talks about many other issues such as abortion, gay marriage, double standards, cronyism, environment, pop culture, the wall Bush proposed to build along US/Mexico border, hypocrisy of religious right (”I’m sorry religion is so retarded, but it is”) etc.
If you are Maher’s fan, or if you love Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show and/or Colbert Report, this show is for you. Also, if you’d like to hear what a popular comedian and TV person thinks about Bush’s legacy and the current presidential race, watch it – it’s only1 hour long. If you don’t see it, you won’t regret it either, but it is entertaining.
The good: his delivery is pretty good, and there are lot of hilarious one-liners and ironic comments targeted and right-wing republicans and religious right. This is a live performance and the audience loved it.
The bad: he deviated into talk about sex and masturbation for too long. Even if you are a raging liberal you might be offended a few times; imagine how would a conservative feel (which may not be a bad thing), but mostly even in his negativity he was right on the money, like “..he tried to appoint his cleaning lady to Supreme Court”. Nobody will remember this performance after 2008 elections.
I kinda miss Maher’s “Politically Incorrect” show he used to host for almost 9 years on Comedy Central, although I was almost never agreeing with his points, but then again a political show on Comedy Central is usually about clowning and being outrageous.
DVD contains 1 bonus feature called “Bill Maher finds a purpose in life”. Since he did the show in under an hour he read a few passages from Rick Warren’s book: “he talks about God like they are in a rat pack: Chapter 7, The Reason For Everything… Chapter 9, What Makes God Smile.”
