Basic Instinct (1992) DVDJust watched the original 1992 “Basic Instinct”, director’s cut. This was one of the most controversial and talked-about movies when it came out. Brought me back to the days when I saw it when I was in high-school.

The plot: everyone saw it.

The good: one of the most memorable movies of 20th century, at least in the erotic thriller category. Hot steamy sex scenes, great musical score by Jerry Goldsmith – it’s like watching Hitchcock’s Vertigo.

DVD features:

  • Blonde Poison: The Making of Basic Instinct – interview and commentary with director Paul Verhoeven (Turkish Delight, RoboCop, Total Recall, Showgirls, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man) and Jerry Goldsmith, the composer of the score.
  • Cleaning Up Basic Instinct – plays every scene with redacted words voiced over, probably for TV version. Can’t believe how much it dumbs the movie down.
  • Storyboard Comparisons (Love Scene, Car Chase, Elevator Murder) – very nice storyboard drawings.
  • Photo Gallery – pre-production and production photos slide show – some are quite interesting.
  • Theatrical Trailer – There’s more then one. I haven’t seen them before. Hey, trailer’s in the early 90s looked like trailers in the 80s :)
  • Cast And Crew Information – Short bio and filmography of Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone, George Dzundza (Gus Moran in the movie), Jeanne Tripplehorn (Beth Gardner in the movie – this movie took her career off. The Firm with Tom Cruise, Waterworld, Mickey Blue Eyes, Dial 9 for Love etc. followed), Paul Verhhoeven (director), Jan de Bont (cinematography – The Jewel of the Nile, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, Lethal Weapon 3, Speed 1&2, Twister etc.), Joe Eszterhas (writer – Nowhere To Run, Showgirls directed by Paul Verhoeven. Author of American Rhapsody, a book about Clinton-Lewinsky affair).
  • Production Notes – miscellaneous trivia and facts
