Yet another sport farce comedy with Will Ferrel and Jon Heder. Directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck.

The plot: Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder of Napoleon Dynamite and The Benchwarmers, he also did a lot of voice overs, such as in Monster House, Robot Chicken, Surf’s Up) was a child ice-skating prodigy adopted from the orphanage by a billionaire who was known to raise orphans into star athletes. On 2002 Olympics he competed against his arch-nemesis Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) for the Gold medal, but they both won. After a brawl at the medal award ceremony the National Association of Ice Skating banned both of them from competing for the rest of their lives for unsportsman behavior. Few years later find out about the loophole in the NAIS rules: technically they are banned permanently from competing only in single skating competitions. So they decide to put off their differences and former disagreements and shock the world of ice skating by entering competition as a couple – in the pair competition. But the rival pair, the reighning king and queen of the ice, Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg (Will Arnett and Amy Poehler), is scheming to prevent Jimmy and Michael from succeeding in the World Championship.

The good: A lot of good energy. Couple of good one-liners and genuine loughs here and there. This movie won several awards and ten nominations including BMI Film Music Award for composer Theodore Shapiro and Costume Design Guild award for excellence in contemporary costume design, however I don’t think MTV awards should count because it’s an MTV movie. Costumes were indeed very cool. The directors come from the world of commercials, and they have no idea what to do on the set once the scene takes longer then 30 seconds, so most scenes are pretty short. The story is quick and fast paced, but not fast enough – bad jokes were stratching the scenes. Pretty strong beginning and ending, but the middle of the movie was not so exciting. It beings out some good deep emotions about childhood and dreaming, especially the dream sequence.

The bad: Slow in the middle. This movie has every feature that makes Will Ferrell’s and Ben Stiller’s movies so recognizable – clowning, too many jokes that were not funny and gross-out jokes – they are an acquired taste. Not my cup of tea, sorry.

The summary: Will Ferrell is a macho egoist and John Heder is a fragile insecure skater with a lot of feminine properties. Jenna Fischer (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) plays Jimmy’s love interest. This is basically Talladega Nights on ice. Ferrell’s routine was duller then the blades of his skates.

p.s. Rob Corddry appeared and had a few lines in the beginning. I kept waiting for him to re-appear.
