4/5

Written and directed by Kevin Smith (”Catch and Release“, “Dogma“) this romantic comedy starring Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express, Superbad, Knocked up etc.) and Elizabeth Banks (”Definitely, Maybe“, “The 40 Year Old Virgin“, “Catch me if you can“ and more), albeit R-rated, is a good movie to see on Friday night.

The plot: Coffee-shop employee Zack (Seth Rogen) and his room-mate Miri (Elizabeth Banks) who have been platonic friends and know each other since school, are so short on cash and late on utility bill payments their water and electricity are cut off. They decide to solve their financial problems by making an adult movie. Zack becomes the director of the movie and co-stars with Miri, together with their new friends – Zack’s co-worker who finances their project in secret from his wife, and port-star-wannabes that they auditioned. Zack and Miri talked themselves through the uncomfortable idea of having sex on camera - for the money (”it’s just sex”), but as they begin to shoot the film they discover that their feelings for each other are not what they thought they were.

The good: 5-star funny dialogs. Despite the blunt and off-putting (for some) title, it’s a pretty sweet romantic comedy, where at the center of the plot is the idea that sometimes people who knew each other for a long time don’t know they are in love or don’t develop romantic feelings until they had sex – How Harry Met Sally is a good example. Both Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, whom we first met in “40 Year Old Virgin”, have had a great career since then, and they are both marvelous in this movie and there’s great lovely chemistry between them. One of the funniest scenes is when a drunk guy (Tyler Labine) walks into the set where a sex scene is being shot and starts talking about Steelers game – it was better then the “Silent Scene” in Revizor (The Inspector General).

The bad: The plot is too predictable. From the start it was obvious how the movie is going to end, but the journey, nevertheless, was a lot of fun. There’s a lot of nasty stuff in the film including diarrhea ending up on a guy’s face - most of which are designed to get cheap shock-induced laughs. All the jokes you can imagine that can happen on a porno movie set – did happen. A lot of ass and boob there, even male frontal nudity – all to make the audience laugh – things you see in movies like Scary Movie.

Similar movies: Full Monty.

The summary: not as funny as Superbad or Knocked Up, but still a fun and sweet romantic comedy to see at the end of the week. Saw it on October 31 – the theater was 1/3 full because of Halloween night, but for the most of the movie the audience roared with laughter. “Did they really just do it?”, kept exclaiming audience members.

The crew: Director – Kevin Smith | Writer – Kevin Smith | Producers – Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein, Carla Gardini, Scott Mosier, Laura Greenlee | Original Music – James L. Venable | Cinematography – David Klein

The cast: Zack – Seth Rogen | Miri – Elizabeth Banks | Lester – Jason Mewes | Mr. Surya – Gerry Bednob | Bobby Long – Brandon Routh | Roxanne – Anne Wade | Brandon – Justin Long | Jenkins – Tom Savini | Deacon – Jeff Anderson

This film is so hilarious ha ha. “I am a delivery man and I have some cream for you” and the chocolate frosting scene. I love Seth Rogan and he is a great actor. If you like one of his films you will like the all.
