Inside Man is a supposed perfect heist movie directed by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster, Willem Dafoe and Christopher Plummer.
The plot: In the opening sequence Dalton Russell (Clive Owen) confesses on video from a cell that he is planning an execution of a perfect heist. Then he and his buddies actually take over a Manhattan branch of a bank with hostages. Detective Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington), already facing corruption charges, is assigned to negotiate the release of hostages. But the bank’s owner Arthur Case (Christopher Plummer) has something to hide in one of the deposit boxes, so his man, Madeleine White (Jodie Forster), too enters the negotiations, bringing more instability to an already fragile situation. If the heist is perfect – why is the plotter in the cell? Why are the plotters not in a rush to leave the building?
The good: Clever plot with unexpected twist at the end. Good pace of the movie – great thriller. I liked how interviews/interrogation videos were intermixed with the heist story: this device is used to slowly, very carefully, reveal the goals and motivation of the plotters. Good acting. Jodie Foster gave a good performance as Madeline White although her character is a bit of a cliché. I liked the duel between Denzel Washington and Clive Owen. Christopher Plummer was just great.
Memorable quotes:
Hostage: I am a Sikh. I wear a turban to cover my head in respect for God. I am not an Arab like your men called me. Why can’t I go anywhere without being harassed? I go to the bank – I’m taken hostage and being harassed. I am released – I am harassed by police. I go to the airport – I get “random” searched.
Frazier: I bet you can easily get a cab though!
Hostage: I guess that’s one of the perks…
The bad: this movie is easily forgettable. Unrealistic dialogs – people don’t talk or behave like that. The whole movie the actors march on at the pace of the background music – like Ocean’s 11.
The summary: nice heist thriller with an unexpected twist in the end. The movie will keep you guessing and part of the fun is that it’s not clear what’s going on until the very end.
